  •   Steel Body

When Master Yang first came to Australia, he was amazed at Australia’s sheer passion for Rugby. Not having anything like it in China, he perceived how the Steel Body training in the Yang Mian™ System could benefit the players on the field, and began to dev elop a specially designed course that would compliment the existing training programs of rugby players.

The incorporation of Yang Mian™ Training principles into Rugby League was a logical and evolutionary step. Because it is a sport that involves a lot of heavy contact between multiple players, it is important for players to be able make heavy contact without sustaining injuries to themselves, whilst still maintaining and further maximizing their ability to power through any opposing players who are unfortunate enough to get in their way.

Yang Mian™ accomplishes this by training the player’s body to be flexible like rubber, so they can absorb any energy that is directed at them and bounce it back outwards. The power output developed occurs naturally upon impact, and causes the body to become like metal all over in a fraction of a second, causing anything making contact to be penetrated by a sharp jolt of kinetic energy. This is called “spring power”, and can be likened to taking a heavy-duty spring, pushing it down as far as possible, and then letting it go. It is the same explosive unleashing of energy that is taught in the Yang Mian™ System, and in the Rugby Steel Body Course. Once a player has achieved this level, their ability to take even the biggest of hits, and charge full speed into opposing players becomes as natural as passing the ball. Knowing that they are far more resilient against injury, and able to project much more power than previously thought, the players gain a unique psychological edge over their opposition, which can make all the difference in a competitive sport of this nature.

As part of this unique course, Master Yang personally designed a special training device to assist in the training of players, and help develop each player’s natural “living way” of attacking, which is a trademark of the Yang Mian™ System.

After 2 years of development, the course was made available and taught to 10 players of the Sydney University Football Team during the 1999 off-season. That year saw the team win a minor premiership and 15 games straight.

More than happy with the field results and the newfound success of the Sydney University Team, Master Yang sent a representative of the system to oversee the instruction of the steel body program to the Penrith Panther’s first grade team during off- season. The resulting success saw the team through to the top 8.

    Article by John Gibbons

When most people think of natural weapons they include fists, fingers, elbows, feet, palms, head - all body parts that can be used to reach and punish an opponent.

However the entire body is a weapon system including chest. back, shoulders, hips and any other part of the trunk as well as the limbs The following examines a technique known as Steel Body which uses the body as armour making it impervious to blows and kicks and useful as a variety of additional weapons. No part of the body is excluded as a tool of combat. Once a student has developed this Steel Body skill it will remain with them for the rest of their life.

The technique controls the body's intemal pressure and muscle reaction, passes into the subconscious or automatic mind. and springs into action whenever it is needed. A high standard can he achieved in a matter of months.

The technique is derived from Yang Mian™ Kung Fu bought from mainland China by Master Yang Zhen Hua about nine years ago. Some parts of Yang Mian™ can also be taught separately from the rest of the system and applied to other martial arts and sports as well.

The system is described as a suitable addition to other martial arts styles. In doing so an increase in speed and lethal effectiveness is achieved in both attack and defence without any change to one's loyalty to a different school.

In the past this magazine has referred to Spring Power which is a rneans of releasing inner power to achieve greater speed and force in fighting techniques. Spring Power is also flexible in its application and can improve one's performance in sports outside the range of martial arts. Golf is an example Any golfer who has discovered the secret of releasing Spring Power will he rewarded by increasing the length of drives Spring Power is also a central skill in the development of Steel Body.

Many martial arts enthusiasts will have witnessed demonstrations of people being on the receiving end of powerfuI kicks and blows from fists, timber or metal without injury or pain. Most readers will be aware of the 'iron shirt' technique which is the name given to this sort of ability by some styles of Kung Fu.

The term Steel Body is used in Yang Mian™ to single it out from Iron Shirt. Steel Body has a double role. Steel, especially spring steel, has qualities iron cannot duplicate. For example it has flexibility. It can be made to yield to a force without breaking and then rebound with energy added. Steel will stay intact after being struck in ways that would shatter iron. It was no accident that ancient swords made of bronze gave way to iron when it was discovered. And it was a similar leap forward when iron swords were replaced by those made of steel.

Evolutionary progression was what Master Yang had in mind when he designed the Yang Mian™ technique of Steel Body. It goes beyond

the concept of an iron cover for the body and reaches into another level. It is a way of training which makes the body as resistant and resilient as steel in its immunity to blows, strikes or kicks and at the same lime provides a weapon in itself. Steel Body can strike down an opponent in its own right independent of whatever the arms, hands, legs and feet are doing at that time.

It can also be used to temporarily disable an opponent for other finishing techniques to be employed Or it can serve as a firm warning to someone not to press a situation any further.

It goes well beyond using a hip or a shoulder to knock a person off balance or shock their system. Steel Body enables the martial artist to attack in ways that arms and legs cannot block. It makes body contact of any kind dangerous by using techniques unfamiliar to an attacker

To understand Steel Body as body armour you might try kicking a car tyre .The sort of resilient strength and rebound effect that you encounter is the way striking someone with Steel Body feels. The force of an attacking blow can also be multiplied and made to rebound back into the opponent causing injury to the fist, foot or other body part he is using. Being hit by Steel Body when it is used as a weapon is like being hit by a sledge hammer with a surface of car-lyre rubber

The technique of Steel Body cannot be learned from a book or a description. It has to be learned from a teacher who has already mastered it. However. some of the theory behind it can be described to give a rough idea of what is involved

There is also the 'Blood/Air theory'. used to explain the changes that take place in the body as a result of training. Approximately 75 percent of the human body consists of liquids. A human body contains somewhere between 60 and 80 trillion cells. Each one has its own liquid environment.

Imagine that amount of liquid being compressed by a strong flexible and elastic membrane of muscle. In addition, air is also internally compressed as in the rubber membrane of the car tyre. This combination of internal forces both under conscious control, is the basis of Steel Body technique.

The Yang Mian™ System has been described as a form of "moving Chi Kung". The build up of air pressure within the body and the increased flow of Chi adds to the amount of internal force which can be generated and controlled by the fighter. The combined blood/air pressure is brought under conscious control so that it can he instantly increased decreased at will. One moment your body can be relaxed and pliant to touch and then instantly transformed to become a resilient from of armour when attacked. Or it can suddenly explode like the air bag in a car, increasing its surface area with great power and speed.

The forms of muscle control involved have to be consciously practiced at first but they St on become instinctive When that stage is reached Steel Body just happens as an automatic and instant reflex whenever it is needed.

There is a natural progression in Steel Body training. Lessons begin with students learning special methods of muscle control. Steel Body muscle control is like learning to wiggle your ears. Some people can do it instinctively but most other need to find out how to consciously tune into the muscles and influence them. At first nothing happens. However once the link up between conscious mind and body muscles is established it is easy to do and after a while become automatic. From moving ears to moving body muscle mass to manipulating body pressures is a simple progression that only requires proper guidance and practice.

There is no damage or punishment to the student's own body during training. Each step follows a natural progression to which the body quickly adapts.

Using Steel Body as a weapon is a more advanced stage of training. It combines muscle control with the ability to focus the internal pressure in any direction so that a body part instantly expands with force and inner power. It is a little like the famous 'one-inch punch' coming from the torso rather than the fist. However Steel Body doesn't require the body to use that space. No withdrawal is necessary. A Steel Body blow can be delivered like an air bag explosion while in close body contact.

Once students have come this far they are instinctively controlling internal power the instant they come into contact with another object. They are now ready to progress from body contact with resilient objects which have some give and take to tougher targets.

Common sense might suggest that deliberately striking something like a brick wall with parts of your body would be the strongest test, but this is not so. The greatest test of Steel Body is to come into strong contact with another Steel Body exponent. A brick wall does not hit back. Therefore advanced practice has students colliding with each other because the combination delivers the greater shock waves. Energy is instantly redirected back to the other person with additional force added. That is why a blow to Steel Body can injure the attacker but not the original target.

Some of the value of Steel Body in other body-contact sports will be obvious, especially to martial arts people who are also football fans.

There are also age limits to Steel Body training. Between 18 and 45 is the optimum age. Young people have bodies still reaching for maturity an might be susceptible to the degree of impact in training. Older people night find the internal pressures involved too much for them. There is no risk for people within the acceptable age range.

    Article from Inside Rugby

The force is with the students

A little-known martial art is being credited with helping Sydney Uni rise to the top of the tree in the NSW first grade premiership.

Strange experiments and weird sightings go hand in hand at university. Picture the scene . . . big prop Jarrod Bryant takes one short step into the brick wall in one of the Sydney University dressing rooms, and it topples over.

Cut back to a few months earlier. A relatively short man, who has not played Rugby since his school days 20 years ago, stands inches away from first-grade co-coach Anthony Eddy, leans into him, and sends him scuttling backwards as if he'd been hit by said prop.

"There was nothing to it (the hit)," Eddy remembered. "He was only centimetres away from me but he gave me enough to send me flying."

Arrive at University Oval at the right time and you may even spot a couple of players swinging their arms like windmills or puffing their bodies like bullfrogs. Weird stuff.

The man to blame for the shenanigans is the Australian Chief Instructor of an ancient martial art called the Yang Mian™ system.

Cut back to Eddy again after the demonstration. "The players thought I was mad,"Eddy said. "But after he did that to me I thought: It's got something to it. Let's talk war.

So he did, and eventually eight intrigued players, possibly with too much time on their hands, volunteered to begin a three-month off-season Yang Mian™ program with sessions three days a week.

Not surprisingly, they copped plenty from those who didn't volunteer. Comments like "look out, you're going to take off" (remember the windmill action) and "you look like an idiot" abounded.

These days, though, it is part of the Sydney Uni culture. "Everyone still thinks it's bloody strange," Bryant said. "You get a bit of ribbing but I think everyone can see the benefits."They certainly keep away from us when we're doing the one-on-one tackling drills." Okay, it might be a little rich to suggest the system can take all the credit for the Students' re-emergence as a premiership force in theCitibank/Mastercard Cup this year, but ask any of the players on the program, and they'll tell you it works.

"It's turning into a bit of a story around the club," Bryant says. "I'm probably the one who's got into it (the system) the most out of everyone. I like to do it just before the game. "I'd gone through the routine and I like to hit the wall a bit afterwards to get used to the hits and the impact.

"I started doing it in Round 1 and by the fifth or sixth match I'd finally knocked the bugger down. It didn't hurt a bit."

Attempting to solve the puzzle in just a few words, it improves breathing and stamina, and develops internal power and its instant release at the moment of body contact. Using training methods called Through Arm aNd Turtle Back, it inessence gives players a "steel body'', able to recover from big hits or injuries quicker. Players can generate a lot of force with little momentum

Inside back Kieran Shepherd said: "Now when I go into contact situations, it doesn't bother me. It won't stop you from going backwards when you're hit but the impact's certainly not what it used to be. I've never been winded this season as well."

While this is the first known case where it has been used in Rugby, it may not be the last. Master has also been lending his services to a Cricket player, a boxer and a tennis player.

He even infiltrated the Canterbury Rugby League team a number of years ago, only to have his plans scuppered when coach Chris Anderson headed south to Melbourne.

He demonstrated his art on one of the toughest competitors ever to grace that code, the Bulldogs' legendary five-eight Terry Lamb' although Lamb himself cannot remember the episode "He must have knocked me out," Lamb quipped.

From all reports the brick wall in the Sydney Uni dressing room said exactly the same thing—moments before it was pushed over.
